We spent the night at the Residence Inn San Diego Gaslamp Hotel for New Years Eve. We redeemed our annual free category 1-5 night from our Marriott Premier Credit Card. The Residence Inn Gaslamp hotel is a category 5 hotel and is eligible for the free night certificate. The rate at the time was $309 per night plus taxes. Using our free category 5 certificate, we only spent $85 for paying the credit card’s annual fee. That’s over $200 in savings! I wouldn’t mind at all paying $85 for a free night at a nice hotel on New Years Eve!
Review of Residence Inn San Diego Gaslamp Hotel
This hotel is rated one of the best hotels by Tripadvisor in San Diego for its location and value. We stayed in a studio suite in Room 1006 during our one night stay. It was a nice room in the corner, which I might have been upgraded due to my Marriott Silver status, but who knows.
Each studio suite has a kitchenette, which includes a microwave, refrigerator, small stove, and kitchen utensils. It was nice having a kitchenette because we had everything we needed for a small party for about four people.
The room also had a small living room with a couch that could fit an extra person for the night.
The Residence Inn San Diego Gaslamp provides free breakfast for everybody regardless of Marriott status. This was a great benefit for us because we are only Marriott Silver members. However, the downside is that breakfast was quite crowded.
Instead of eating in the crowded breakfast dining room, we brought our breakfast back to the hotel and ate by the window. It was a much nicer and more relaxing setting for us. Clever marketing technique by putting a Marriott logo in the waffle :).
Overall, I agree with the Tripadvisor reviews and would rate this as one of the best hotels in the San Diego Gaslamp district. It was very nice and convenient to have a kitchenette, location was great, and is a good value. We used our Category 5 free night, but 25,000 points is not a bad deal because rates can be in the $200-$300 range. Marriott points can be tough to use, but this hotel might be a decent redemption choice. Anybody else use their Marriott free night lately and on what hotel?
