It seems like people have experiencing tough credit card approvals with Barclaycard recently. In the past, people could easily apply for a Barclaycard US Airways Credit Card every 3 months to receive the sign up bonus. Rapidtravelchai reports he applied for five Barclaycards and was approved for four credit cards. However, it seems like Barclaycard has caught up with people churning credit cards and I have not heard recent reports of approvals of two Barclaycards at once. I also tried applying for two Barclaycards in April and was denied for one of them. Therefore, I suggest not applying for two Barclaycard credit cards at once.
There have been reports on Flyertalk that the reason people have been denied initially was because Barclaycard saw a pattern of using the card a few times in the beginning and never using it again.
One of my readers Charlie, reported that he applied for his Barclaycard Arrival World Mastercard in July and his application was pending approval. He waited 2 weeks until he received a denial letter via snail mail. He told me that he “would not take no for an answer” decided to give Barclaycard a call.
When Charlie called, the representative noted that he had a short sale 3 years ago. However, his credit has been excellent since then. The representative understood his situation and approved him for the Barclaycard Arrival card stating that his short sale initially disqualified him, but his credit score was high enough (750s) for approval!
Key Lesson: Be patient to hear a response from Barclays and then call their reconsideration line at 866-408-4064.
Additional Tips for Approval
- Calling the reconsideration line right away usually does not work. They will tell you your application is pending.
- Wait about 10 days as noted on the application to call the reconsideration line.
- Apply for the Barclaycard first if you are applying for multiple credit cards in one day because it is the toughest credit card to obtain. It’s possible to receive an instant approval if you have not applied for many credit cards recently.
- Wait at least 6 months between Barclaycard applications. Numerous reports on Flyertalk that users have been denied for “too many inquiries” and the representative would not approve them with multiple calls to reconsideration department. Barclaycard takes “too many inquiries” more seriously than Chase or AMEX.
Those are some of my tips and other reader’s experiences. Anybody else have tough credit card approvals with Barclaycard recently or can give everyone else additional tips?
