Update 8/31/13 – Got approved for AMEX Personal SPG after 12 months of cancelling and 30K bonus confirmed. Used current SPG # when I applied. Details coming in a post soon.
I applied for the Citicard AA Platinum Visa (50K), American Express SPG Personal Card (30K), and Chase British Airways (50K) yesterday. Here are my preliminary credit card churn results:
Citicard AA Platinum Visa – I read numerous reports on Flyertalk, that Citicard AA Platinum Visa was churnable again. I applied for this card on 5/23/13, and decided to apply for it again. I normally apply for credit cards on Monday, but this time I was impatient and applied Sunday.
Result: My application was pending, so I called the reconsideration line on Monday. The representative had told me I was denied because “You can only have one personal airline card at a time”. I was confused because I had read Flyertalk was informed it was a different product. However, I started reading reports that starting Sunday that the personal card was no longer churnable. Epic Fail!
I wasted a credit card inquiry by attempting to apply for the Citicard AA Platinum Visa again. I should have applied for the business version because I cancelled the business card about 4-5 months ago. Hopefully my mistake will teach you something.
American Express Starwood Preferred Guest Personal Card – As stated previously, I’m attempting to receive the 30,000 SPG bonus again since it’s been over a year since I cancelled my card. I called the reconsideration line to process my application.
Result: I was told I had to cancel one of my four AMEX credit cards to be approved. Note that the general rule is that you can only hold four credit cards with AMEX, not including charge cards like AMEX Platinum or Gold. I cancelled an AMEX Costco card that I never use to be approved for the AMEX SPG Personal Card. I tried verified with the representative that I applied for the 30K bonus, but was unable to verify if I qualify for the bonus again. I will have to call back when I receive the card to confirm I will receive the bonus again. So far so good.
Chase British Airways Personal Card – I already have 5 personal Chase credit cards and 2 business Chase Ink cards. I was expecting to give up one of my personal Chase credit cards for this credit card. I have a Chase Marriott that I never use that I’d gladly give up since Marriott doesn’t really fit my travel needs.
Result: Instant approval! I was surprised that I could still get an instant approval after applying for so many cards.
I messed up badly on the Citicard AA Platinum Visa card and should have applied for the business card instead. My AMEX SPG card was approved, but I’m still not sure if I will get the bonus again (hope so). My Chase British Airways card was an instant approval and I should receive it soon. These are my preliminary credit card churn results, and I’ll report back on my AMEX SPG bonus. I went 2 for 3 in this round, success or failure?
Note: There is a new official Citicard AA Platinum World Mastercard 50,000 sign up bonus non-affiliate link here. I don’t believe you can have both a Visa and Mastercard, but correct me if I’m wrong. I would not apply if you’ve had a Citicard AA Platinum Visa in the last 18 months. If you’ve never applied for one, might want to consider it because it’s probably one of the best sign up offers right now besides Chase Ink.
