Frankfurt (FRA) to Los Angeles (LAX)
July 4, 2013
Duration: 11hr 40min
Aircraft: Boeing 747-800i
Seat: 83H, 83K (Business Class)
This was one of the flights I was waiting to take for a couple months. Originally, I was going to fly economy class back from Munich. I randomly saw availability on the Lufthansa new business class Frankfurt to Los Angeles on the 748i FRA-LAX on 4th of July. Luckily there was a schedule change, so I could just pay the extra miles and switch my flight to business class. I’d say at 50,000 United miles and $125 in taxes per person for this flight is totally worth it. That’s just one credit card sign up per person for a $6,000 flight!
Since we were staying at the Sheraton Frankfurt airport hotel, we just rolled out of bed and headed to the Lufthansa Senator Lounge. Unfortunately, it was very crowded and we just had a few snacks and coffee. We left the lounge about 40 minutes prior to boarding.
I was really excited to see the Lufthansa 748i through the window as we walked towards the gate. The plane was huge!
We skipped the long line of people lining up for economy class and was greeted by the friendly German flight attendants. They directed us to our seats 83H and 83K on the upper deck! It was really cool to be on the upper deck because it felt like not many people were on the plane even though it was mostly sold out.
The Lufthansa new business class set up was a 2-2 configuration, which was completely fine for my wife and me. I could see how it could be a bit awkward sitting next to a stranger because the footrest is only separated by a plastic divider. The best thing about the new configuration is that the seats are completely lie-flat. There’s also ample storage if you sit next to the window.
The meal service started promptly. We started with drinks and appetizers. The entree took quite a bit of time to come out and the dessert followed shortly after. Lufthansa has some of the strangest food. I thought the meals were just okay, nothing great and not too terrible. If you don’t like exotic food normally, you probably won’t like the food. The drink menu also had some interesting items on the menu…
After a long dinner, I watched the Hobbit. The movie was very slow and I fell asleep for an hour or two after a while. I finished the movie and then watched Identity Thief, which was pretty hilarious. I couldn’t sleep that long because the flight was a day flight and I slept more than enough the night before.
The lunch service started about 3 hours before landing. Lunch included a curry soup and salad. It was better than dinner, but still nothing that special.
By the time we finished lunch, our flight started its descent. We were informed we would arrive about 30 minutes earlier than expected. You have to love German efficiency, always on time or early!
The Lufthansa new business class was very comfortable and the lie-flat bed was great. Service was attentive and very efficient. I couldn’t tell if the food was just not that great or if it was just too exotic for our tastes. Nonetheless, we were able to sit back and relax for a good 11 hours. At 50,000 United miles per person, I would say that it was a great deal! This is one of the reasons why I love Chase Ultimate Rewards. Earn those points and burn them! That’s a wrap for this trip report, sorry it too so long! I’ll be giving away a new Lufthansa business amenity kit in a few days, stay tuned for that.
