I know recently that hotel points have gotten a bad reputation, but I still think they are quite valuable when redeeming hotel points during holiday times.  Holiday rates for hotels can be sky high at times, but points rates stay mostly the same during holidays.  Using hotel points for New Years Eve and other holidays can be great value for your points if you plan far ahead or get lucky.

Taking a look at some popular cities, I see some tremendous values when using hotel points for New Years Eve.  Let’s take a look at New York City:

Almost 4 Cents a Point

Almost 4 Cents a Point

It looks like most New York City hotels are sold out at the moment because it is quite late.  The Sheraton Brooklyn New York is decent, but not that great according to TripAdvisor (still 4 star rating though). It seems like the trick is to book WAY in advance.  Here is next New Years… may want to book now with points.  You can always cancel at no penalty.

Wow! That's tremendous value right there for 12K SPG.

Wow! That’s tremendous value right there for 12K SPG. NYE 2014

I took a look at Hyatt properties for New York and they are all sold out.  SPG seems to have the best availability of hotels and best deal with hotel points in other cities.  I looked up a few hotels in San Diego, Los Angeles, and Chicago.  Here are some good deals I found on SPG points:

W Chicago - 12K SPG

W Chicago – 12K SPG

Westin Gas Lamp, San Diego 10K SPG

W San Francisco 12K SPG.

W San Francisco 12K SPG.

W Hollywood 16K SPG. $649 Retail

W Hollywood 16K SPG. $649 Retail

As you can see, you can get a good value per SPG point when redeeming SPG points on New Years Eve.  I personally don’t like huge crowds, but this year I’m doing something different.  I’ll be in a foreign country for New Years Eve.  I’ll be spending New Years Eve here:

Taipei 101 Fireworks

Taipei 101 Fireworks

I was able to secure a room at the Luxury 5-star Grand Hyatt Taipei for only 12,000 Hyatt points.  This is awesome value because they just remodeled the hotel.  The hotel is sold out now, but the retail price was $500+ for New Years Eve.  I think this is one of my top hotel points redemption.  Can’t wait!

Will you be using hotel points for New Years Eve?

I thought they would change the # of points needed based on the current price, but I guess not? Great tip if true.

For SPG? No, its usually fixed, but category 5 hotels can be 12,000 SPG or 16,000 SPG depending on the season.

Thanks. Enjoy Taipei at New Year’s Eve. I spent one year in Taichung for NYE- 1999. What a blast! Anyway, I’m spending this year in SFO at Hyatt Regency SFO 3 nihgts (Diamond Level) and 2 nights at the W Hotel SFO for NYE. It’s going to be GREAT! Spending this time with a friend coming in from Japan. Woo Hoo. Plus getting there and leaving on United miles.
