Why You Should Apply for the AMEX Platinum Mercedes Benz Credit Card Soon

Follow me on Facebook or Twitter or subscribe via email below to never miss out on a deal!

Note: Only the AMEX Platinum Mercedes Benz has $200 airline credit not the normal Mercedes Benz credit card. I confirmed with AMEX on 11/17/13.

“@AskAmex: @romsdeals I’m sorry, the $200 Airline Fee Credit is a benefit of the Mercedes-Benz Platinum Card from American Express. ^B”

The current offer for the person AMEX Platinum credit card is 25,000 Membership Rewards points right now.  However, the AMEX Platinum Mercedes Benz credit card (non-affiliate link, I receive no credit) is offering 50,000 Membership Rewards points right now. The downside is that the credit card has a $475 annual fee.  Despite that fact, it might be a good idea to apply for the AMEX Platinum Mercedes Benz credit card right now.

Here are the benefits of the AMEX Platinum Mercedes Benz credit card:

  • Earn 50,000 American Express Membership Reward points after spending $3,000 within the first 3 months
  • $475  annual fee NOT waived for 1st year; No foreign transaction fee
  • Membership Reward points transfer to Delta, British Airways, Singapore KrisFlyer, and more airlines
  • Lounge access to Delta, American Airlines, & US Airways
  • $200 credit towards airline fees such as baggage charges, lounge membership, etc.
  • Earn 5 points per $1 spent at Mercedes Benz & 1 point per $1 elsewhere

The two main reasons to sign up for the credit card are the 50,000 AMEX MR points and the $200 credit towards airlines (includes gift cards).

The trick: Apply for the AMEX Platinum Mercedes Benz now and receive $200 airline credit in 2013, 2014, and beginning of 2015.  You will be able to get the $200 airline credit 3 times.  You have 60 days from when your annual fee hits to receive a full refund on your annual fee.  You will end up with $600 of airline gift cards.  I did this same exact method earlier this year with the normal AMEX Platinum credit card as I talked about here.

Note: You cannot have held an AMEX Platinum credit card in the last 12 months or else you will not be eligible for the bonus.  See ThePointsGuy’s post here for more details.

Conclusion

You can earn $600 in airline gift cards and 50,000 Membership Rewards points for $475.  I would say that is a great deal because your annual fee is cancelled out by the airline gift cards.  50,000 AMEX MR points can transfer to 60,000 British Airways Avios at the moment or 50,000 Singapore Air Krisflyer miles.  The Singapore Krisflyer program is looking really good and affordable after United’s devaluation announcement.  I’d say apply for the AMEX Platinum Mercedes Benz credit card in your next credit card churn if you are eligible.

    Hi! I have 3 questions:

I have a platinum Amex but as an authorized user vs. being the primary do I qualify to apply?

Also if I lease a Mercedes and make monthly payments does that count as a “Mercedes” charge for 5 times the PTs

Also how do you request to get your $200 airline credit as a giftcard?

    • November 15, 2013 at 8:40 am

      1. Yes you do qualify to apply if you are currently an authorized user.

      2. I believe you have to lease a new mercedes and present the $1000 voucher to the dealership.

      3. You just buy 2X $100 AA gift cards and you will see a credit in a few days. For UA, you just buy a $200 egiftcard. Here is proof of people recently being reimbursed. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/american-express-membership-rewards/1300452-200-airline-fee-reimbursement-reports-ua-only-41.html

Do I buy it from American Airlines website? Or thru American Express?

        • December 2, 2013 at 8:55 pm

AA website. You can buy 2X $100 AA gift cards and get reimbursed in a few days.

Hi. A little confused about how these two sentences from your post can BOTH be true:

    1. “I did this same exact method earlier this year with the normal AMEX Platinum credit card.”
2.”You cannot have held an AMEX Platinum credit card in the last 12 months or else you will not be eligible for the bonus.”

#1 seems to say you can have both card in operation (with bonus?) simultaneously.
#2 seems to say if you are limited to doing this with only one card

I realize you may be talking about the bonus as restricted, versus the $200 reinbursement, but want to be sure,
    Thanks.

You can’t have two platinum cards at a time. I’m waiting until January when it’s 12 months since I applied for Amex platinum to get this card.

Okay, which means you cancelled the first AMEX platinum early this year. right?

Is this the same card that has a one day offer of 100K every now and then? Or is that a different one? I’d rather an extra 50K points instead of the $200.

In my experience you do NOT need to wait 12 months between cancelling your “regular” AMEX Plat account and getting the MB version to get your 50K bonus. I cancelled my AMEX Plat in sept, then a week later applied for the MB version. I got the 50K bonus, plus the 10K bonus the rep gave me a few weeks before for threatening to drop my regular Plat. So total I got 60K points.

Just to be clear…my bonus posed in September. So if AMEX did change the terms since then, they didn’t apply to my churn.

    • November 15, 2013 at 7:27 pm

Amex did change the terms. I would suggest not going against the new terms.

I ve signed up early in Jan-3 of this of this year with 100k bonus, how do I take advantage of the $200 and cancel the fee ? Thanks

    • November 16, 2013 at 9:05 am

You can get another 200 in 2014. Just call to cancel and they will waive your fee.

I meant the comming Jan-14 once the bill is due, do I have enough time for the $200 and still be able to cancel ?

    • November 16, 2013 at 9:05 am

      You have 60 days

do I have to wait for the charge($200) to post and deducted before I call in to cancel ?

        • November 16, 2013 at 6:23 pm

I would def wait until then to be safe

I just checked the terms and the $200 airline credit is nowhere to be found. Does this card still include this benefit?

    • November 17, 2013 at 9:29 am

It should. I few reports say so. I would call to make sure.

Why should your reader “check to make sure”??

YOU are the one who implicitly guarantees this will work by blogging about it, because you hold yourself out as an “expert”.

Come on Rom, either check yourself to make SURE, or pull the post altogether.

        • November 17, 2013 at 1:38 pm

I did check and they will credit $200 airline. I encourage people who are skeptical to also verify if they would like. Thanks for your comments Paul.
