Today I was able to confirm my second sign up bonus on the same Chase credit card. Specifically, I earned 50,000 Southwest Rapid Rewards on the Chase Southwest Premier Rapid Rewards credit card ($99 fee version) by signing up for this same exact card again.

Traditionally, Chase only allowed one sign up bonus per credit card product per person. However, the terms and conditions have changed and now they say:

This bonus offer is available to you as long as you have not received a new cardmember bonus for this product in the past 24 months.

I basically interpret these terms as you can get a sign up bonus again after 2 years from earning your first sign up bonus.  I first signed up for the Chase Southwest Premier Rapid Rewards credit card back in July 2011!  I recently signed up for this same credit card again on 8/19/2014.  That is over 3 years since I first signed up for the card.  I did not record exactly when I received the bonus, but it is safe to say I reached the bonus 3 months after.  Therefore, I probably could have signed up for the same card again in October 2013 if these terms were effective.

I was still a bit skeptical whether or not Chase would offer me the sign up bonus again for the same exact card.  I finally logged into my account and saw the following balance:

Southwest Rapid Rewards Statement

Southwest Rapid Rewards Statement

Awesome!  I had earned the bonus again for the same exact credit card!  Now that I know that these terms hold true I will make sure I record the date I earned the bonus, so I can sign up for the same card 2 years later!  This is traditional credit card churning, signing up for a credit card, canceling, and reapplying to get the same bonus.

Here are some other Chase Credit Cards that I plan on signing up again for the 2nd time.

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred – Applied on 9/22/2011
  • Chase Freedom – Applied on 11/24/2011
  • Chase Marriott – Applied on 12/21/2011
  • Chase Hyatt – Applied on 5/02/2012

I currently have the downgraded CSP card, Chase Sapphire so I’m wondering if I need to cancel that first.  Also, I currently hold the Chase Freedom and Chase Hyatt credit card.  I’m thinking should I cancel these cards and then reapply right away?  Would there be a cool down period to wait before reapplying? My strategy with credit cards is always to call the retention line and ask for a retention bonus.  However, would canceling and reapplying be a better strategy?  I may have to reconsider my strategy.

Note: The Chase Southwest Premier Credit Card link is the best offer for this credit card at the moment.  I may earn 5,000 Rapid Rewards if you are approved, thank you very much if you choose to use my link!

So do we need to cancel and then wait 2 years to reapply? Or is it just cancel at some point and reapply 2 years after bonus earned?

According to the terms, you should be able to cancel at some point and reapply 2 years after bonus was earned the first time. I cancelled my SW card a year after applying.

I wonder if it works if you took a retention bonus offer since it’s technically not a new cardmember bonus offer. So get 50k after spending 2k, then a year later, pay the $99 fee and get 9k points (instead of 6k points), and after two years, cancel and then re-apply.

I think it should work. All I can report is a signed up for the card in 2011, cancelled when annual fee hit, and reapplied in 2014 and got the bonus again.

Anyone reading this may want to hold off on getting the 50K bonus from the Southwest card until after December 31. That way, they will be best situated to get a second SWA card and go for the Companion Pass, which will then be good through the end of 2016.

    • November 19, 2014 at 7:47 am

Yes, my next post will be about the Companion Pass. However, you can still apply for the card and don’t spend until January 1st. It’s good to have the card a little bit before January 1st so you can make sure you are ready. I would apply early December or so at the latest.

Romin, I agree with your assessment and think the 2-year timeline is based on the date of the previous bonus, rather than from the cancellation of the card. Does anyone have evidence that the bonus is valid even for current holders of the card (meaning that you now have two of the same cards, the first card acquired two years ago)?

I don’t think you can hold two of the same card at a time with Chase. They will not approve you.

Is there anyways to figure out when did one apply for the credit card first ? I dont recollect when did I apply for the card

I keep a spreadsheet, but you can always check your statements or call them.

Bhanik, keep good paper documentation or excel spreadsheets going forward. =)

Romin, just to clarify your point about ‘not spending’ on the card until January, I thought the points won’t post until the billing period after you’ve completed MSR (min spend req), so technically you can spend $1,999 and then cross the MSR on Jan 1st or around that time, to activate the transfer of points into your account. Or do they sometimes transfer early?

    • November 23, 2014 at 8:42 pm

That could work, but you might not get credit for the $1,999. I would just wait until Jan 1 to be safe.

So Southwest Rapid Reward Plus ($69 version )and Premier ($99 version), are they the same product? I got SW Rapid Reward PLUS in August 2013. Can I apply SW PREMIER now and got 50,000 bonus? Thank you for your advise

    • November 23, 2014 at 8:42 pm

      They are actually different products.

I currently have a hyatt card. Signed up May of 2012. I’d like to cancel now and reapply in February. Have a trip to paris in May and would love 2 nights at PH. Would canceling and reapplying that close raise suspicion? Have heard horror stories of people’s points getting confiscated for violating chase terms…is 2-3 months between cancel and reapply too soon?

I’m not too sure on that one, but I would give it a try personally. I don’t think they would take points away.

I’m interested to see if you have success receiving the bonus on a second Hyatt card. I’ve read mixed results on this and looking to hear from someone reliable.

Maybe I’m slightly paranoid about potentially missing a bonus after meeting the spend, but the official wording has me a little leery of applying right now. Here is a direct quote “This bonus offer is available to you as long as you have not received a new cardmember bonus for this product in the past 24 months”. So my thinking is that you can’t apply until after 24 months has passed from receiving the bonus. I received my bonus at the end of feb 2013, so it seems like the offer that I am applying is not valid for me. Has anyone received a second bonus on the card who has similar circumstances as I mentioned?

    • February 9, 2015 at 6:36 pm

To be safe, I would wait 27 months since you first applied for the card. For your Feb 2013 card, you can wait until July 2013 to be safe.

I got the first card DEC 14 of 2012 received the bonus 2/27/2013 canceled the card Nov 2013. Reapplied on March 1 2015 met the spend and received a second bonus. So I applied pretty closed to the received bonus date and was able to get a second bonus. So I would give it a couple days after you received the bonus to apply.
