We had no idea what to expect from Prague, but we heard it is one of the most beautiful cities in the world because it was well preserved during World War 2. Another reason why I wanted to go there was because it is much cheaper than Western Europe.  The prices for lodging, food, and activities was very reasonable.

We spent 4 nights at the Hilton Old Town Prague hotel for only 130,000 Hilton HHonors points.  To book this hotel at this rate, you need an American Express Hilton card of any kind and call 1-800-920-5649 to book the “AXON” rate.  Since Hilton Old Town Prague is only a category 5, the AXON rate is 130,000 for 4 nights. You can see more info about booking AXON rates in this Flyertalk post.

The hotel was nicely located, only about a 5 minute walk to the old town square, where are the action occurs.  Since we were Hilton Gold members, it included a breakfast buffet every morning downstairs, saving us even more money on food.  In addition to breakfast, the Executive Lounge included appetizers at night and free Czech beer (alcohol is almost never free in US hotels).  For only 32,500 Hilton HHonors points a night, I would say this hotel is probably one of the best deals on Hilton points.

We spent our first day on a free walking tour, which I highly recommend to get a feeling of the city.  The tour we used was Sandeman’s New Prague tours.  We were able to find where to buy tickets to an Opera, which only cost $10 for balcony seats.  The tour guide gave us a great history listen about Prague that I highly recommend.

Prague is simply an awesome relaxing city where you can stroll and enjoy the scenery.  Old town Prague and the Charles Bridge are amazing to stare at and walk around.  You can see interesting street performers and just people watch all day. Here’s an example of a street performer:

We enjoyed paddle boating around the river and soaking in the atmosphere.

Visiting the Prague Castle is a must.  The views are great and the history is quite interesting to see.  We had great weather in Prague in the summer and there are many places to eat outdoors and enjoy a beer.  One of the best parts about Prague is that food is reasonable and beer is $1-$2 in your average restaurant.  At outdoor parks, it can be less than $1 for a beer!

If you are going to Prague with a significant other, there are some great romantic restaurants next to the river that are very reasonable pricewise.  We had a nice 3 course meal right by the Charles Bridge at Hergetova Cihelna for about $35 a person.

I think Prague is a great city to soak up the environment and enjoy late night walks.  Though it may not be as world reknown as Paris or London, I think it’s definitely a hidden treasure with lots of interesting history.  There are a lot of tourists in Prague, but that didn’t bother me too much because Prague is a walking city and you don’t need to wait in line to see the amazing attractions.  Have you been to Prague? What did you think?

Totally agree Prague is a quaint and enjoyable town, mainly because its so walkable.

By the way, are you in on that Discover It / Apple Pay craze?

And on a related but separate note, I know that app-o-ramas are generally a thing of the past and that application timing nowadays requires more thought than just every 91 days, considering the different CRAs and the need to study the credit boards. However, when I was preparing to apply for the discover card (TU pull), I couldn’t bring myself just to apply for that one card. I felt like I was ‘wasting’ a pull, even though all the other cards I was considering pulled from EX or EQ. Was my logic of applying for other cards on the same day, faulty, a knee-jerk reaction from days long past? Or did I do something right by also applying for other cards even though I wasn’t that interested in them. I ended up trying the 2BM for the Alaska Air cards, both pending and I get a gut feeling I should wait it out rather than call in. My Discover IT was approved instantly.

I’ve had a discover card… I’m not sure I would get one just for the Apple Pay promo but it might be worth it if you’re a big spender.
