One of my favorite hobbies that I rarely get the chance to do is snowboarding.  I started snowboarding in high school and got really into it and continued in college.  Unfortunately with life’s business, I haven’t been able to go.  Also, snowboarding as gotten incredibly more expensive since I first started.  Snowboarding in Southern California isn’t necessarily the best, so you often have to travel to find good snow.  To cut down on travel costs, using airline miles can save you lots of costs.  What’s even better is that Lake Tahoe is offering free ski passes for the same day you fly in.  We were able to Fly and Ski Lake Tahoe with Southwest Companion Pass.

Lake Tahoe’s official site has all the details on flying and skiing for free the same day.  You must fly into Reno International Airport to take advantage of this deal.  From Los Angeles, we took the Southwest Flight 6955 9:35am LAX-RNO flight, which arrived at 11:00am at Reno.  To receive your lift ticket, follow the baggage claim signs and you will find the Mountain Concierge booth where you can exchange your boarding passes for Squaw Valley Lift Tickets.  A day lift ticket in peak season costs $180 per person (insanely expensive)!  One important thing to keep in mind is to hold onto a copy of your Southwest Boarding Pass.  To do so, use your electronic boarding pass instead of your paper one.

We saved a bunch of money by maximizing the Southwest Companion Pass and getting two free lift tickets.  We paid 18,000 Southwest points for our LAX-RNO ticket, and added me as a companion.  This was a bit more points than I would have liked to pay, but it was peak season over the new years.  We also rented a car, for $30 a day, which I used the Chase Sapphire Reserve’s $300 credit on.   All together we saved the following:

  • $300 X 2 = $600 on flights using SW points and Companion Pass
  • $180 X 2 = $360 on Squaw Valley lift tickets.

We picked up our bags around 11:30 and got our rental car and was on the road by noon.  It took about 45 minutes to get to Squaw Valley and we were on the slopes by 1:00PM.  Although Squaw closed at 4:00PM, it was still a great 3 hours of runs.  Can’t complain, unless I was paying full price!  Lake Tahoe is beautiful!  Fly and Ski Lake Tahoe with Southwest Companion Pass is an amazing deal!

Great idea, Romin! Do they have direct flights from sjc, too?
