Rom, have you test out the new card called My Vanilla, as posted on dans deals, however he didnt go into detail of process of getting cash out. I m waiting for a permanent card of my vanilla and see if it works like dan said. just wonder if you have tried it.

    • January 7, 2013 at 8:55 pm

I’ve applied for one, but vanilla reload and bluebird is better. The my vanilla has a 50 cent fee per transaction I think. I found the fees too costly.

Hey Rom, have you ever transfer MR pts to a family members mileage account. In this case, I want to send a few Ks MR pts to my sister Asia Mile account from CX. do you think its possible ? Thanks

    • March 14, 2013 at 12:51 pm

Yes very possible. You just can’t transfer MR points to another persons MR account.

Rom, I ve tried it but doesnt seem to work. it default to my AM account #, doesnt let me input my sis account. could you detail me the steps or how you got to it to work ? thanks

To transfer you need To add a program to your Membership Rewards account go: membershiprewards.com -> Points Summary -> Linked Travel Programs (bottom right corner) -> Scroll to the bottom of your linked programs and then link Link Additional Programs.

    hi there
    love the site

how far in advance did you book your hawaii flights on ba?
    thanks

    • June 17, 2013 at 6:32 pm

I booked my Hawaiian flights on BA about 8-9 months ahead because I travel during peak seasons. If you aren’t going during peak season, it should be easier to find flights. Flights using Avios for AA flights can be cancelled and you will only lose your $5 taxes per ticket if not done last minute (I think 21 days).

Hyatt shouldn’t charge you resort fee when using points, but parking is still expensive.

I call AA when I see lots of flights available on British Airway and JAL for Cathay flights, but AA tells me nothing is available. Do you have any suggestions for booking Cathay First with AA miles?

Use BA search engine to look for space then call.

Any tips for churning chase cards? I had a Southwest some time ago. Cancelled then signed up for another Chase (I thought a year passed so I was ok) but then they denied my promotional points.
Do you know/think i’ll qualify for other chase cards? These are separate though? How many chase accounts can I have at one time?

Any idea where I can get beans in/around OC (Irvine-ish)? All the stores seem tapped out or are cash only :(

I guess that means gift cards. I don’t understand ” tapped out”. Grocery and drug stores? Walmart, Target, Costco?
Office supply stores? Some can be bought online. VISA, Vanilla. Green dot cards are cash only. Maybe in banks or in their websites.

    few questions

1 ) I have chase IHG free night certificate from my Chase PC club and the certificate expires in April 2014. Can I give this to anyone like my sister if she is traveling? How I do it?

    2) My wife, Myself & my sister have the US airways card with 60k miles each. If my sister doesn’t need her USairways miles, do you think it makes sense to transfer her miles to my account by paying 50k miles for $567? I wonder if USairways miles can be used to book hotel & car rental too like AADVANTAGE miles does?

    3) Do you know if there is a way or trick to add & track United miles on award wallet? What is it?

    4) Have you ever used or still use usingmiles.com? I signed up for their lifetime membership promo many months ago but never actually have yet added my miles or points.

    5) Do you know if you get 5% back on amazon payment using Discover card? They have 5% back on online shopping from Oct-Dec.
    6) My wife & I received offer from Citi. it is 2 miles per dollar up to 2500 miles only on online shopping. What you think is the trick to do this? I do online shopping but it is from Amazon & I have 2000 in amazon gift card balance.
    Buy visa gift cards online?
    Thanks

    • October 6, 2013 at 6:13 pm

      1. It is very YMMV. You can call the hotel and authorize someone else to check in.

      2. I think it is worth it if you plan on using the miles soon. I would only use for international travel for best value. I don’t think usair has hotel and car rental with miles.

      3. None I am aware of.

      4. Never tried it.

      5. I’ve gotten it in the past.

      6. You could try Amazon Payments.

    • Jerry Mandel
      November 28, 2013 at 1:39 pm

      2) It makes no sense to transfer miles.Sister merely buys a ticket with her miles in your name or wife’s name.

Rom, what’s the cheapest award travel/airline to go to Taipei (TPE)? I see United as 120k miles, is there any other airline that is cheaper?

    Thanks!!

    • October 10, 2013 at 9:20 pm

US Airways is 90K round trip. Miles are harder to get. There’s a share miles promo right now if you have any miles already you can take advantage of it. Otherwise you can get us air cc or Amex spg.

United is easiest to get miles through chase sp and ink bold and plus.

    Hey Rom,

Have you heard anything about changes with buying Visa and Mastercard GC’s from Kroger or Kroger affiliate stores? I’ve been buying the variable visa GCs from our local City Market for over a year, got 1 point per dollar, and not only did I load up on points, it also saved me tons at the pump. About 3 weeks ago, I went in to do my routine gc roundup and didn’t get any points. I tried 3 other stores in my area and all yielded the same results (I live in Colorado). I called my parents in Utah, they tried several stores and the same thing happened. I then tried another store in Utah, completely different area, and no points once again. I know that technically we were never supposed to get points for those cards, but most people always did. I haven’t read anything on any blogs about Kroger cracking down on this, but what are the odds of 7 stores in 2 states suddenly not giving fuel points for these cards anymore? Have you heard anything about this? Has there been some kind of policy change? I’ve also noticed that the variable Visas and Mastercards now look different as well. Anyway, maybe this is old news and I am just missing the info somewhere, but I thought I would ask anyway. Thanks!

    • October 13, 2013 at 8:18 am

They could have caught on and coded in the system they won’t count anymore. I’ve heard reports of that. Sorry!

  21. Jerry Mandel
    October 13, 2013 at 9:11 am

It seems like all grocery stores are no longer giving fuel points on loadable gift cards and on their own store gift cards. It may continue on all gift cards.

      December 1, 2013 at 1:16 pm

      Hey Jerry,

Is this confirmed that this no longer works? I found another post of yours (below) and was considering this strategy.

“I charge (US Bank) gift cards at Krogers. ($500 each) and get big fuel points and miles or points to meet minimum spending.. An automated phone call gets a PIN to convert to debit cards. Money orders in Walmart cost 68c per $1,000 MO. Deposit MOs in bank checking account. SAME DAY recycling of funds. Fuel savings more than offset all fees=a tiny profit. No wasting time with Vanilla, Bluebird, Amazon. I charge fuel at the pump with FREE US Bank Kroger 1-2-3 Rewards credit card for more fuel discount. Last fill up was 13.3 gallons X $1.25 discount = $16.63 savings. Maybe similar at other grocer chains?”

      Thanks!

    HI Ron,
    Are you familiar with Aadvantage?
my question is I booked a flight from LAX to HNL in Jan. I will be flying AA but I booked my flight with BA with avios points. I also have Citi Aadvantage card so it gives me free checked bag and group 1 boarding. I called AA yesterday just to confirm my benefits but the rep told me since I book my flight with BA, benefit will not apply. She told me in order for the benefit to apply the flight must marketed and operated by AA, but my is marketed by BA instead.
    You have way around it?
    Thank you

She is wrong. Did you pay the government taxes/fees with your Citi AAdvantage card? Show the card at the baggage check in counter. If questioned, tell agent that fees paid with your card.

Kroger gives no fuel points for loadable gift cards and for their own Kroger gift cards. They do give fuel points for restaurant and store gift cards. (Maybe better luck with other chains.) With a minimum of 100 points, I use the no fee US Bank Kroger 1-2-3 Rewards credit card to pay at the pump. That gives an extra 15c off per gallon in addition to the discount from your accumulated fuel points. As I recall, the Kroger credit card gave an extra 25c off per gallon for the first 90 days (?)/year(?). Apply for the Kroger credit card at a Kroger service desk. Note: Kroger has some subsidiary chains. Scan the Kroger loyalty key ring tag at the pump first.
I was getting the big fuel points before they cut out the points on the loadable gift cards. The Kroger loyalty program will let you select from a long list of charities and will send your selected one something from all your purchases. Maybe other chains do the same?

    Hi Rom,

I remember reading a blog your wrote on the Citi AAdvantage card a while back. You mentioned that you received $200 statement credit for AA purchase. So does that mean you have to spend $200 or more with AA to trigger that statement credit? or you can just spend less than that to trigger it? Also, can you buy an AA gift card to qualify for it? I don’t have any travel coming up anytime soon for me to fly on AA, so I am trying to think of ways to get that $200 statement credit.
    Thanks,
    Anna

    • December 2, 2013 at 5:56 am

The card you are thinking about is AMEX Platinum. You would need that card and you can buy 2 X $100 aa gc and get statement credit. The citi aa card does not have such a thing at the moment. The Amex platinum offer is only 25K now. Might want to wait for a better offer.

    Hello Rom,

First of all, thanks for your website. It has great information.

I have one question. I have a very good credit score and I’m getting ready for the multiple credit card application using the different browser method.

I’m interested in the initiation bonus offered by those credit cards, but I have no intention of keeping these cards to use in the future. When is the right time to close them? Any strategy you would recommend at the time of closing to have least impact on the score?

    Thank you for your help

    • December 17, 2013 at 6:19 am

Read my post today. Keep each card for at least a year and longer if they offer you anything. Transferring your credit line when you close the card minimizes the damage. Your score will be fine if you pay in full and on time every month. Let me know if you need help with card choices or anything else. Feel free to email me too.

Thanks for getting back to me. I’ve been collecting points since last October and have only had one opportunity since then to go to Europe(lack of vacation time) so i have more than 800K airline miles combined between USAirways, AA United/Chase UR AMEX MR/Avios, and SPG points. I would like to go to Israel and someplace else for a total of 2 weeks in late May to early June. Would you be interested? I’ll know my dates in the next 2 weeks. 2. Is it possible buy a sim card at NRT airport ? (I have a unlocked iphone 4)
    Thanks!

    • February 15, 2014 at 2:39 pm

      1. Get the fidelity cash management ATM card

      2. They don’t use SIM cards. You’ll have to rent a wifi hotspot or phone.

  33. Jerry Mandel
    February 15, 2014 at 7:36 am

Many credit unions rebate foreign ATM fees when using their ATM cards. Ask your bank about fees using its ATM card. Always notify credit and ATM/debit cards when and where you will be so your cards will not be declined. Ask your cell phone company and Japan Tourism about SIM cards. AARP will lend its members a cell phone for overseas use.

I want to pick your brain for a second. My fiance and I are fairly new to the game. Our intended April churn: Me – Barclay Arrival, BofA Alaska Airlines, and Chase United. Her – Chase Ink Plus, American Citi Advantage, and Hilton Amex.

Hi Rom, thanks a lot for your highly informative blog! Could you shed lights on how to book EVA flights (SFO-TPE) using UA miles? Do I have to call UA and incur a tel booking fee? I read your post in Jan (Hello Kitty) and really appreciate your guidance on detailed steps – leaving in 1 week and not sure if UA.com has the same visibility of seats vs. EVA site .etc. Safe and fun travel in Hong Kong! Hi Rom,

We travel to Taipei, Taiwan every year from JFK/LGA/EWR. We just started MSing and signing up for bonus rewards after reading your blog (thank you!). How do you suggest to proceed on getting business class flights for free/cheap? Generate Amex Rewards and transfer to Dynasty Flyer on China Airlines? Generate Delta points and get an upgrade on China Airlines via SkyMiles (is this even possible?)? Get the China Airlines credit card and generate points directly? Generate points on something to transfer into Star Alliance and upgrade on Eva Airlines? Use Chase UR points somehow? Use a different airline? There are so many options I’m not sure what’s best. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    • March 21, 2014 at 7:50 am

I would collect UR for Eva air. China air does not have a gold program.

      • Billy L
        March 21, 2014 at 11:20 pm

I logged into Chase Ultimate Rewards and there’s no option to transfer points to Eva. But I can book Eva flights directly through Chase UR. Are you suggesting this method since I get 1.25 value on the UR points? It seems UR points are translated directly into $. I checked a few dates from NYC to TPE and it’s about ~90k UR points (~$1k) in Economy or ~430k UR points (~$5.4k ) in Business class on Eva. Assuming a generous 50k UR points for every credit card signup, that’s 9 credit cards I need to sign up for before getting 1 business class flight. Am I looking at this right?

        • March 22, 2014 at 8:14 pm

You have to search on united.com and transfer to united

          • Billy L
            March 28, 2014 at 10:55 pm

I did some more work on this and this is the best I could come up with. I hope it helps others:

If you have Chase UR points, transfer to United to fly on Eva Air. Thanks Rom. It’s 80k business and 35k economy, one-way at the saver-award rate. Taxes and fees for business class seem to be very low ($18). Economy is under $100.

If you have SPG or Amex MR, transfer to AA to fly on Cathay Pacific. It’s 55k business, 35k economy, one-way. Up to $145 in taxes and fees.

That’s the best I could find on these reward programs going from the US (NY) to Taipei.

    • March 21, 2014 at 7:51 am

You can transfer 90K MR to ANA for roundtrip to taipei.

      • Billy L
        March 28, 2014 at 11:04 pm

It looked to me like transferring MR to AA for Cathay Pacific instead of ANA was better because the fees and taxes are cheaper. I was seeing around $290 in fees each way on ANA. I was only seeing $5 in taxes and fees from NY to Tokyo when flying on AA metal. I don’t know if the fees are the similar if you use the AA miles to fly on Cathay Pacific from NY to Taiwan. Do you know what AA would charge in taxes and fees on this route if you redeem through Cathay Pacific?

What are your thoughts Rom? 55K vs 45K on business but you (potentially) save a lot on the taxes and fees.

        • March 29, 2014 at 9:14 am

Aa roundtrip on Cathay would be about $100. I think Eva roundtrip with ANA would be $300-400. Might be worth it to do direct flight. But in the end depends on scheduling and availability

  39. Billy L
    March 29, 2014 at 7:36 pm

How about Amex MR or SPG to US Airways for 90k round trip business class? When US Airways was part of the Star Alliance, you could do that with Eva. Now that they are part of OneWorld, 90k for round trip on JAL or Cathay sounds pretty good. What do you think?

  40. Billy L
    April 22, 2014 at 7:56 pm

    Rom,

Can I ask you for some more Asia travel advice since it seems you go there often? So I have AA miles to book a trip to Japan and Taiwan. I plan to visit Japan first for a few days and then to Taiwan for a few weeks. Since AA got rid of their international stopovers, does this mean I have to book 2 separate awards to visit both countries? Meaning, I have to book from NY to Japan. Then book another award from Japan to Taiwan? Or is there a way to do this with one award?

If I need to book a separate award, do you have any suggestions on the most efficient ways to use points to go from Japan to Taiwan?

    Thanks!

    • April 23, 2014 at 11:55 am

You will have to book NYC to Taipei then tokyo to NYC for example. Use avios 10K from tpe to tyo oneway on Cathay or jal. Using an open jaw and one way with avios is the best option.

I just booked a award travel on a Cathay Pacific flight using AA miles from EWR to HKG. The agent charged 10% of fare for our infant as expected. However, when I booked another award travel coming back from HKG to EWR, they charged us 25%. The agent said the reasoning behind this is because of Cathay Pacific taxes and fees, and that taxes and fees are different depending on where you originate. The American Airlines website agrees with this posting states 10% of the fare.

[Interestingly, when I looked at infant fare for Cathay Pacific flights on British Airways using Avios, I notice they are charging me 10% Avios miles for the infant fare (not more $). So it seems to me the infant fare is based on the carrier with miles, not the carrier you're flying.]

The AA agent who put the award on hold said 25%. The booking agent double checked with the desk and also said 25%. So, am I suppose to be charged 10% of 25% of the fare? Should I keep calling back and what should I say in response to the 25% on Cathay Pacific?

It should be 10%. Avios is the best for infant fare

Hi Rom. I know one of your favorite destination is Maui. I was offered to stay at the Hyatt Regency this summer for a very good deal, However I want to ask you about the ease of getting around Maui without a car rental. Hyatt charges $25 per day for parking which adds up over a week of stay. I never been to the Hyatt or Maui but the deal was so good, I had to jump in. do you think its possible to get to all the famous points without a car ? Thanks

No, you will need a car. Don’t be stuck at a hotel! Car rentals are cheap

I have two questions for you,

    1. I want to enter the Hyatt Diamond Challenge that coincide with my Maui vacation but want to maximize the 2 months time, how long from the time I send the request to the actual begin of trail ?

    2. I want to use your booking service for mid 6/2015 summer vacation using USAir miles, when do you think its the right time for you to start looking ? here is what I have in mind
    3 pax
    Cun-Athen(stopover)BA F
    Athen-doh(layover)Qatar F or J
    doh-sgn(destination)Qatar F or J
    sgn-hkg-lax CX- F
lax-cun(through away segment) anything, dont matter

I will provide further details once you set a time line to book.

    Thanks

      1. Takes about 3 business days
      2. I can start looking next month but 3 tickets will be tough. Usually 2 is doable.

i certainly cant separate my wife or child on different flight, however I do have enough points to cover both F or J. I dont mind a mix of both F or J among three of us as long as we travel together.

Hi Rom, great site. Enjoying your bora bora trip report very much. Am traveling to Intercontinental Bora Bora Thalasso myself in Jan 2015 – very excited though I hear it rains more that time of year. Had a question about PPT airport transit time in customs.

Am flying Air Tahiti Nui (LAX to PPT), arriving at 5:55am. There is an Air Tahiti flight (PPT to BOB) departing at 7:15am. The next one leaves at 10:45am.

Is it feasible to make the 7:15am flight? Not sure if PPT customs will make the transfer time (1hr 20 min) too tight…

    Thanks so much!

    Hi Rom,
Do you happen to have a chance to take a look at the new Master credit card issued by Sam’s Club? It offers 5% on gas, 3% on travel and dining, 1% on everything. Please let me know how you think about this card.

    Thank you

Recently I read some Credit Card agreement have something like gift card is not an eligible purchase to gain the bonus they provide
for example some american express credit card
does that mean we cannot use some of the fee free method to meet the minimum spending requirements?

    • August 22, 2014 at 9:23 am

There are no reports of that rule being enforced

OMG…. I cannot believe you really answering me….. I am so excited when I read about your blog
I am planning to do similar things that you do, but for me I just do not travel that much. Probably once in a year.

I did some research online in this site and some of the airline’s site. I found out business class mileage award is usually not available, but economic and first class is more available. Is there any tricks to get the business class one? since it is one step up than economy class but not cost as much as first class.

In addition, I read about getting almost 100k points just for signing up 2 chase credit cards. Can you combine both cards points to redeem a ticket?

Thank you for creating this blog and I am really appreciate you take your time to answer my dumb questions. Thanks!!!
